II. COMMENTS ABOUT OUR LAST MAILING (AFM/RMA/FAIRPLAY)
The comments below and elsewhere in this mailing represent the
uncensored views of the readers and not necessarily those of the
COMMITTEE. In the faith that freedom of expression allows for the
birth and ascendancy of the most beneficial ideas, all sentiments
expressed are welcome, subject to the bounds of good taste and
decorum. If you disagree with an opinion expressed by any contributor,
we encourage you to rebut it here.

I have had serious apprehensions about the AFM over the years but hearing
that President Lee and the IEB are turning the screw on the RMA gives me
hope. The RMA is the most destructive organization to the profession on
the landscape, in my opinion, and should not be allowed to control the
marketplace.

Colleagues,
Holding the belief that knowledge is always better than ignorance,
we wanted to share these documents with you.
We have presented these in the order of relative importance: national, then local, then individual.
========================
I. AFM President Tom Lee’s letter to recording musicians:
August 15, 2008
Dear Recording Musician:
I suspect that by now you have either seen or heard about the July 1, 2008 letter from
Fareplay President Rafael Rishik. In that letter, Mr. Rishik - who is a member of Local 47,
seeks to raise money for potential legal actions against the Federation on a number of issues
about which, he claims, the Federation has not lived up to its obligations.
In fairness to the entire Federation membership, I believe it is important that I outline the facts
regarding these issues so that you, as an AFM member, can be better informed about the
Federation’s activities on your behalf.

I. VP VINCE TROMBETTA’S RECENT OVERTURE COLUMN
Did you read Vice-President Vince Trombetta’s latest Overture article?
Vice-President Vince Trombetta used the pages of our Local’s newspaper, the
Overture, to launch thinly-veiled attacks not only on a Local 47 delegate to
the national convention, but also fellow members who cared enough about the
future of our federation that they spent their own money to attend the convention
for a week to witness the democratic process at work.

========================
I. CLARIFICATION OF OFFICER PERFORMANCE RULES
In case anything listed in the last mailing was unclear, here are the rules
governing performances by Officers of the Local. Only a few of the larger
Locals restrict the “In jurisdiction” performance of officers because so few
Locals can afford to pay officers an appropriate salary. Local 47 is one of
them.
Local 47 officers or employees can play any job they want outside Local 47’s
jurisdiction, no questions asked.
The Local 47 bylaws prohibit Local 47 titled officers and business representatives
from working union jobs within Local 47’s jurisdiction, UNLESS granted special
permission by the Executive Board. (Note - this does not apply to directors or
trustees.)

I. PART TIME OFFICERS (TRIPLE DIPPING - LOCAL, ORCHESTRAL, RECORDING)
We were forwarded this very interesting information recently.
We believe it merits your consideration.
LOCAL 47′S PART-TIME OFFICERS
I would suggest you consider Secretary Lashinsky’s continuing
performances in Local 47’s jurisdiction. This does not include her
performances with both the Santa Barbara and Long Beach Orchestras
Secretary Lashinsky claims that they are not in Local 47’s jurisdiction.
It is true that these two venues are not within Local 47’s jurisdiction,
but we all know that the vast majority of players in these orchestras
are members of Local 47, and by her working these engagements,
she is, in effect, taking work away from musicians who do not have the
luxury of the generous salary paid to her as Secretary.
This used to be called ‘Double Dipping’ and in the past, Local 47, and
most other Locals would not permit this. But our new Secretary takes time
away from the job to which she was elected to drive to these various
places of employment to make rehearsals, and then the ensuing
performances, in the case of orchestra engagements.
