FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR LACHSA STUDENT

Dear Local 47 Colleagues,

After the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts Orchestra concert some weeks ago, a young musician, Alex Posada, graduating THIS YEAR from that institution, lost both of his parents in a terrible auto accident.

LACHSA is organizing financial support for him and his younger brother, Bryan. Alex was accepted to several excellent colleges and conservatories, including the Manhattan School of Music, using a school bassoon.

Any contribution made to buy his own instrument would make every day of his life sound and feel better.

If you feel you can contribute to the bassoon fund OR to his family as a whole, you can mail a check directly to the School at:

Los Angeles County High School for the Arts
Posada Family Fund

Please read this letter from his Bassoon Teacher Carolyn Beck:

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 7th, three men fleeing gunshots drove their car into a vehicle carrying five people. Alejandro and Ester Posada, who were in the front seats, were killed on the spot. Fortunately their two sons and a friend survived. Nine-year-old Bryan suffered broken bones and bruising and the friend in the middle of the back seat was badly bruised. Eighteen-year-old Alex Posada suffered a concussion, whiplash and bruising. This tragedy occurred after the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Orchestra’s final concert of the year. Alex had shined as the principal bassoonist, playing the solos in Scheherazade. The family had gone out for food and celebration after the concert, and had just dropped off his grandmother at her home.

Alex has been studying bassoon with me for nearly four years, while attending the Los Angeles County High school of the Arts. He will graduate in June, and plans to go to music school for college next September. During high school he has progressed from a beginner to an accomplished young bassoonist and musician. He is principal bassoonist also in the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra and the Olympia Youth Orchestra, and has participated in the Young Musicians Foundation Chamber Music Program for two years. He is not only talented and hard working, but is also an extremely kind and thoughtful individual. His parents were fine people, loving and supportive as they could be. Though it was a financial strain, they found a way to stretch their means so that he could go audition at a few select colleges and conservatories. Alex’s acceptance into the Manhattan School of Music brought joy to the family, as they knew that he had liked that school the most. Alex has accomplished all of this while using a school instrument. The Manhattan School has now offered him full scholarship, but not only is his family (which now includes Bryan, Alex and their Aunt who is stepping in to become a single mom) in need of support for general expenses, Alex still needs a good bassoon of his own.

I ask, if you can do so, to please contribute funds to the Posada Family Fund.
Thank you so much for your support.
Carolyn Beck

Colleagues, thank you so much for reading.

If you can help, we know that Alex and his family will be forever grateful. From the personal experience of COMMITTEE members, what Carolyn says about Alex is absolutely true. He’s a great kid and deserves every good consideration he can get, as would anyone unwillingly thrust into such a tragic situation. Please help of you can.

Until Next Time,

THE COMMITTEE FOR A MORE RESPONSIBLE LOCAL 47
