I. WHAT ARE NINE MINUTES WORTH TO YOU?<\/p>\n
So you\u2019re at an orchestra rehearsal. How
\ndo you spend your time before the downbeat?
\nChoosing the best reed? Change strings?
\nPut in bowings? Tune timps? Check your calendar?<\/p>\n
Well, if you were at a recent Burbank
\nPhilharmonic rehearsal, you had 9 minutes
\nbefore the downbeat stolen for a sales
\npitch from Local 47.<\/p>\n
The players were forced to sit and listen as
\nsome person from the Local tried to shove
\npropaganda down their throat about some
\nnew program called \u201cUnion Strong\u201d. More
\nlike \u201cUnion Scam.\u201d First it was “Listen Up”,
\nturns out it was really “No, You Listen
\n(from the members)”, the majority of
\nevents with \u201cUnion Strong\u201d have been
\nto press for more studios to record union
\nin town or to push for tax credits to i
\nncrease recording work.
\nThe problem? It won\u2019t help most members
\nand they have the gall to want you to
\ndonate your time and effort to help
\nbring work back for those who ruined
\nthe recording industry to begin with?
\nFat Chance. Don\u2019t be played for a fool.
\nThis isn\u2019t for you, it for those who have
\nthe jobs already.<\/p>\n
Acosta and the rest of them are answering
\nonly to the RMA. Unless you\u2019re in the club
\nthey don’t give two blinks about you.<\/p>\n
One player we spoke to said they might file
\na grievance to get paid for those 9 minutes
\nthe Local stole from them. We think it\u2019s a good idea.<\/p>\n
Speak up or get sheared. It’s as simple as that.<\/p>\n

II. MEMBER COMMENTS<\/p>\n
Every orchestra could do one IMA (Intagrated
\nMedia Agreement) buyout per year and a lot
\nof work would come back.<\/p>\n
100% pension good up front fee.<\/p>\n
But the AFM, owned by the RMA, won\u2019t allow it.<\/p>\n
[EC: That’s the long and short of it.]<\/p>\n

The following was a response to the rendering of our new 47
\nin the latest Overture announcing the formal open house party.<\/p>\n
hmm \u00a0 clicked on the link \u00a0 there is nothing about an auditorium<\/p>\n
the “elite” is totally in charge now and will do whatever they
\nwant. The general membership is woefully uninformed, and
\ntherefore uninvolved. In the last few years the only time when
\nthe membership was informed and activated was when the
\ndirect access blog was up on the internet. It facilitated an
\nonline community of our professional musicians, with a
\ndirect, real-time discussion of issues at hand, independent
\nof Local 47 control. Until a similar forum reappears, the
\ngeneral membership will be marginalized to the point of
\nvirtually vanishing, which is the goal of the elite –
\nas long as they keep sending in their dues checks.<\/p>\n

No quorum yet again for the April GM meeting.
\nHowever, expect a quorum for the July meeting….
\nthere is a designated group that has put together a
\n“strategic plan” that includes adjustments to the by-laws.<\/p>\n
The whole thing stinks!<\/p>\n

I see a sign that says AUDITORIUM…where is it located?
\nSo far there isn’t one!!!\u00a0Does the BOD mean to create
\nan inference that there is an AUDITORIUM?<\/p>\n
The fact is that most of the membership does not use the
\nfacility…sooo…the BOD creates the illusion that there
\nis an AUDITORIUM…? Of course there can’t be an
\n“auditorium” because the City of Burbank will only
\nallow a “‘ultimate-purpose” room! Q.) Is the
\ntomato\/tomauto…or?<\/p>\n
[Yep, we have no auditorium and the only ones the
\nden of compliance want to hear from are the RMA.
\nRank and file need not apply.<\/p>\n
More and more work being done fi-core and non-union.
\nThe Local has made themselves a paper tiger and
\nuseless to all but the in-crowd.]<\/p>\n
