I. NO QUOROM FOR LOCAL 47 MEETING<\/p>\n
BIG take away from the “no quorum” meeting….Local 47\/Club
\nis looking for funding from \u00a0the most wealthy members for
\n“naming rights” to our yet to be built auditorium.
\n(Names floated….Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach , and as
\none member opined …. “must consider John Williams”).<\/p>\n
VP Baptist was very clear that the City of Burbank will
\nnot let the project be called “an auditorium” …only to
\nbe permitted and called a “multi-purpose room” during
\nconstruction.<\/p>\n
A question from a member asked how much does
\nthe Local…(speaker did not identify the Musician’s
\nClub) anticipate allocating for it…? \u00a0Ans: 1 million.<\/p>\n
So much for the sales pitch that the 47\/Club would
\nhave 9-11 million for an endowment after offloading
\nVine Street. Our long term investment dollars are
\nabout 4.5 million. \u00a0It would be nice to know if the
\ninvestment income will close the gap between
\nwhat the Union can pay and the actual cost to
\nmaintain the new property.<\/p>\n

II. NCCMP TRIES TO UNDERMINE BUTCH LEWIS ACT<\/p>\n
MPS Signs on with\u00a0Coalition of Unions
\nAs many of you know, lawmakers in Washington
\nare responding to our pension crisis. In early
\nNovember 2017, the Butch Lewis Act was
\nintroduced in Congress by Senator Sherrod
\nBrown. The proposed law would guarantee that
\nall plan participants receive 100% of their
\npromised pension benefit.\u00a0It is the only plan
\nthat preserves 100% of our hard-earned
\npension benefits.<\/p>\n
For the last few months MPS has been in
\nfrequent contact with lawmakers across
\nthe\u00a0country asking for the \u201cButch Lewis
\nAct of 2017\u201d to be a top\u00a0legislative\u00a0priority
\nand to be included as part of the upcoming
\nomnibus spending bill.<\/p>\n
While we have made progress and gained
\nconsiderable support for this legislation,
\nother forces in Washington are currently
\ntrying to undermine the Butch Lewis Act.
\nThe main opposition is a proposal called the
\nGrow Act. \u00a0This proposal would deny AFM-
\nEPF access to the federal loan program
\nand instead would compel cuts to our
\naccrued pension benefits.<\/p>\n
The main sponsor of the Grow Act is the
\nNCCMP (the National Coordinating Council
\non Multiemployer Pension Plans), which
\nis a Washington lobbying group that in
\n2014 drafted MPRA, the law that allows
\nour pensions to be cut. MPS has previously
\npointed out the strong ties between our
\nAFM-EPF trustees and the NCCMP.
\n(See prior post\u00a0here.) Unfortunately, our
\ntrustees continue to support the NCCMP
\nby paying dues, by serving on their board
\nand by being actively involved with that
\norganization.<\/p>\n
Musicians for Pension Security has recently
\njoined AARP, the International Association
\nof Machinists and Aerospace Workers,
\nthe International Brotherhood of Boilermakers,
\nthe National United Committee to Protect
\nPensions, the National Retirees Legislative
\nNetwork, the Pension Rights Center, the
\nUnited Steelworkers, and the Western
\nConference of Teamsters\u00a0to oppose the
\nNCCMP in its effort to subvert the Butch
\nLewis Act. See the joint statement\u00a0here.<\/p>\n
We call on the trustees of AFM-EPF to
\nimmediately\u00a0show their\u00a0support by joining
\nthis coalition and publicly rejecting the
\nNCCMP’s Grow Act.<\/p>\n
AFM-EPF\u00a0trustees say they support the
\nButch Lewis Act. However, it is impossible
\nto wholeheartedly support it without
\ndisavowing the NCCMP’s proposal. \u00a0By
\nimmediately joining MPS and many other
\nunions by signing onto the coalition
\nstatement and rejecting NCCMP’s proposal,
\nour\u00a0trustees have an opportunity to show
\nplan participants that they are 100% behind
\nthe Butch Lewis Act. They will also show us
\nthat they will no longer allow the NCCMP
\nto call the shots for the AFM-EPF.<\/p>\n
