I. CHRISTINA LEXUTT PASSES<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Los Angeles music community lost one of its hidden heroes
\ntoday. I suspect 95% or more of the people here will not have
\nknown Christina Lexutt, but she was one of the faces behind
\nthe payroll company Sabron which handled all the payroll on
\nhuge numbers of recording sessions.<\/p>\n
As such, if you are a recording musician chances are overwhelming
\nyou got paid because of her. And if you’re a composer (particularly
\na Peter Rotter client) chances are that she is who you paid,
\nin order to pay the musicians.<\/p>\n
She was a very lovely human being, and this is indeed sad news.<\/p>\n

II. Will\u00a0AFM-EPF Trustees Act on New Pension Legislation?
\n\u201cThis is a plan that will work. This is a plan that will work without
\ncuts.\u201d -Senator Sherrod Brown
\nJust last week, on November 16, many of you received the
\nemail from AFM President Ray Hair regarding recently proposed
\nlegislation to assist multiemployer pension funds by US Senator
\nSherrod Brown (D-OH). In the email, President Hair says:<\/p>\n
“I have been in direct communication with Senator Brown’s
\nstaff regarding this legislation. Now that the legislation has
\nofficially been introduced, the Trustees of American
\nFederation of Musicians and Employers’ Pension Fund
\n(AFM-EPF) will carefully review its specifics to determine
\nif it addresses the issues confronting the AFM-EPF…”<\/p>\n
Encouraging words, but so far the Trustees’ position on
\nthis potentially very helpful piece of legislation has been
\nextremely skeptical. \u00a0Here’s what Local 802 President
\nand AFM-EPF Trustee Tino Gagliardi said about Senator
\nBrown’s legislation just a few weeks ago at a Local 802
\nmembership meeting:<\/p>\n
“The Trustees would consider favorably and support
\na legislative proposal that will help the fund and that
\nstands a chance of passing this Congress and being
\nsigned into law. As we have witnessed so far in 2017,
\nthis seems to be a very high bar.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2014 the AFM-EPF Trustees fully participated in
\ngetting MPRA passed. They traveled to Washington
\nDC to engage with the trade groups, the multiemployer
\npension\u00a0community, and policymakers. (MPRA is the
\nlaw that allows Trustees to cut our accrued benefits.
\nRead more about MPRA here.)\u00a0But now, our Trustees
\nare taking a skeptical position and have yet to make
\na meaningful effort to proactively find a legislative
\nsolution to our pension crisis that doesn’t start with
\nthem making cuts to our existing benefits.<\/p>\n
MPS has been working with Senator Brown’s staff
\non this legislation for 2 months and recently brokered
\na meeting between the Senator\u2019s team and the AFM-
\nEPF Trustees. We have also relayed several requests
\nfor information that would be helpful to assess the
\nbenefits of Brown’s proposal\u00a0from his office to the
\nAFM-EPF. To this date, outside of that single meeting,
\nthere has been zero cooperation from the AFM-EPF.
\nAll requests for assistance from Senator Brown’s
\nstaff have been turned down flat by our Trustees.<\/p>\n
So, while we are glad for the encouraging words
\nfrom President Ray Hair, what we really need to
\nsee is action.<\/p>\n
