Symphonic musician<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Reporting issues the Musicians Union doesn&#8217;t dare to mention &#8211; National touring musician<\/p>\n<p>================================<\/p>\n<p>I. BRIAN O&#8217;CONNOR PASSES<\/p>\n<p>After a long battle with cancer, Hornist and Educator<br \/>\nBrian O&#8217;Connor passed away a few days ago.<\/p>\n<p>He was an excellent musician, excellent teacher and<br \/>\nextraordinary person.<\/p>\n<p>For over 30 years, he recorded in Los Angeles as a first call<br \/>\nFrench Horn player for over 2,400 movies, hundreds of TV<br \/>\nseries and shows, thousands of records and jingles and many<br \/>\nLive TV shows including the original Carol Burnett Show<br \/>\nand 20 Oscar performances. He Principal Horn on over 800<br \/>\nmovies. <\/p>\n<p>From 1998 until 2009, Brian taught Horn at UCLA and a<br \/>\nnumber of his former students are now working in high<br \/>\nprofile professional Horn jobs including the LA Studios,<br \/>\nSymphony and Opera Orchestras and Military Bands. <\/p>\n<p>His battle with cancer and the surgery he underwent<br \/>\nwas documented in a film some years ago.<\/p>\n<p>He will be missed.<\/p>\n<p>THE COMMITTEE<\/p>\n<p>================================<\/p>\n<p>II. WELL WELL&#8230;. NOW WHAT?<\/p>\n<p>Well placed member comment&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, (March 2, 2016) at approximately 11:30 AM,<br \/>\nthe staff at Local 47 was called together in the main<br \/>\noffice and told by President Acosta that &#8220;The Burbank<br \/>\nproperty is unavailable&#8221; and he would them keep them<br \/>\ninformed.<\/p>\n<p>Should anyone be surprised?<\/p>\n<p>================================<\/p>\n<p>III. MEMBER COMMENT<\/p>\n<p>Really,  how great is this&#8230;? There&#8217;s an orchestra that does not<br \/>\nhave to be paid &#8230;and they&#8217;re working!!!<\/p>\n<p>Two things&#8230;<br \/>\n1) obviously there are many very excellent and qualified<br \/>\nunemployed musicians&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2) willing to work for free&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>Talk about&#8230;&#8221;race to the bottom&#8221;&#8230;and there are Local 47<br \/>\nExecutive Board members listed on their roster!!<\/p>\n<p>This is just another way to &#8220;clear the decks&#8221;&#8230;when all the<br \/>\nlocally supported community orchestras are put out of business&#8230;<br \/>\nhere comes the new community service model.<\/p>\n<p>Young inexperienced musicians will be told that playing<br \/>\nfor free with Kaleidoscope will be a viable resume credit.<\/p>\n<p>Just a visceral response to seeing this.<\/p>\n<p>[EC: We&#8217;ve spoken to a number of folks who&#8217;ve been<br \/>\nasked to play upwards of 6 services for free per concert<br \/>\n(no paid services). A number of those in the group are<br \/>\nwell placed, even some working to be on the &#8220;inside&#8221; at<br \/>\nLocal 47.<\/p>\n<p>Adding insult to injury they of course charge the public to<br \/>\nhear them.<\/p>\n<p>The union wants to bust any non-union session or gig<br \/>\nthey find, unless there are well politically placed members<br \/>\nplaying for free, in which case Acosta et al do nothing.<br \/>\nThe word dunsel comes to mind.<\/p>\n<p>So then&#8230;. if all these well placed people can donate their<br \/>\ntime for nothing, when you&#8217;re asked about something<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re doing you can say the same. &#8220;I&#8217;m donating my time<br \/>\nto a friend&#8230; back off!&#8221; This should be the new mantra.<\/p>\n<p>Until the Local enforces the rules equally to all members,<br \/>\nthey should enforce nothing. Will that happen? Of course<br \/>\nnot, they&#8217;ve got their ship coming in&#8230; and the elites to<br \/>\nanswer to&#8230;. except they&#8217;ve (and we&#8217;ve) got no ship to go<br \/>\nto&#8230;. see below. We knew there should be a requirement<br \/>\nin the referendum that they actually buy a building with<br \/>\nthe proceeds.]<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n===============================<\/p>\n<p>IV.
