I. RMA TRIES TO BLAME AFM AGAIN FOR THE RESULT OF THEIR
OWN BUSINESS PRACTICES
In a recent RMA mailing you’ll find, in part, the following text
concerning VIdeo Games:
“We all know this is a mess and it is not getting any better.
2008 was a banner year for video-game companies, but
not for us. The companies earned historic all-time profits,
but AFM Video Game employment has nosedived. Sadly,
AFM wages for 2008 were half the wages in 2007. And
2009 is just getting worse.”
The RMA goes on to try to blame the AFM for the problem,
when anyone even remotely knowledgeable on the subject
knows that the RMA itself drove the video game work out
of Los Angeles, starting with their stunt on the SImpson’s
video game.
The video game companies have made it perfectly clear
what they need to return to Los Angeles, or to the AFM for
that matter. The AFM has been trying to accommodate video
game companies while creating and getting back work that
has left. The AFM actions have included increasing health
and welfare and pension payments on Video Game Sessions
while compromising on the back end payments.
FYI, video games almost never have after market payments,
since there is virtually never new use or broadcast use of video
game scores.
One of the problems is the work that has come back is mostly
going to locales like San Francisco, because companies simply
don’t want to deal with the attitudes and hassles of dealing
with the RMALA, when they’re forced to use that minority
subset of professional Los Angeles musicians. It’s just not
worth it, according to the companies we’ve spoken to.
If there was ANOTHER group of musicians they could deal with
we might have a chance, but not as long as the RMA and their
contractors control the game.
The RMA did it to itself (and all of us) here, No member of the AFM
national hierarchy, be it the President, Secretary or IEB member has or
could cause the loss of any video game work here. The RMA cannot
blame anyone but themselves, though they will try.
People simply don’t want to buy their buggy whips anymore.
So the RMA continues to flog itself and then try to say someone
else caused the scars.

III. COMMENTS
The comments below and elsewhere in this mailing represent the
typically uncensored views of the readers and not necessarily those
of the COMMITTEE. In the faith that freedom of expression allows
for the birth and ascendancy of the most beneficial ideas, all sentiments
expressed are welcome, subject to the bounds of good taste and
decorum. If you disagree with an opinion expressed by any contributor,
we encourage you to rebut it here.

GREAT to get this again! Any planned commentary on the lackluster
showing at the Oct. gen. membership meeting re: the cancellation
of the SELA contract? Perhaps missed this due to no SBC service.
An update as of Dec.1st to this member from office of Vice Pres.
stated that the Local will now honor LS-1’s on a case by case basis(?).
This is good news for the few people still bona fide freelancers in
the membership who still want to contribute at least to their pensions.
We’ll take what we can get.

Dear Union Members,
If you are one of the many who can no longer receive Health Care
thru the “union”…
You can get health insurance from NASE or the national association
for the self employed.
I used to get mine there before I got married.
http://nase.org/KnowledgeCenter/HealthResourceCenter.aspx
Kaiser also has some reasonable plans.

Heck, if the union isn’t so helpful why not vote with your feet
and use the dues to pay premiums?

Just got the RMA’s latest propaganda.
the AFM is sick of listening to their bull - that all is well - the little
guy has to keep writing in the committee blog
PLEASE ENCOURAGE ALL TO WRITE IN - APATHY ALLOWS EVIL
MEN TO RULE
I TALK TO PLAYERS ALL THE TIME - THEY CARE BUT THEY DONT

————————–
Just to clarify things and alert your readership about what has
transpired here at Local 802.
Our soon to be ex-administration has been fiscally irresponsible,
seems to be very cozy with management, and has done everything
in its power to avoid listening to our rank and file committees.
(that would include the RMA) . Additionally, every single member
of the Executive Board of the now exiting Landolfi Administration
faces charges of malfeasance for violations of bylaws that are here
to protect the membership. The choice to proceed with these
charges was made by the musicians who populate this union…most
of whom are not full time recording musicians.
Our new administration was elected by a majority that represented
Broadway, Lincoln Center, Jazz, Casuals, and Music Copy, not just
recording musicians.
It is great that we now have an administration that is made of people
who have worked in the field, understand our needs, problems, joys,
fears, and interests. At the same time they respect the rank and file
(because they come from the rank and file), respect the committee
system, and are interested in making things better for the membership.
Isn’t that what all union members who are musicians want?
David Finck
[Colleagues,
Considering David Finck's more than cozy relationship with all things
RMA, you might want to take his statements with a pound or two of
salt. After all, a majority of musicians in the LA Local are not recording
musicians, yet the vast majority of our board and officers are in the
pocket of the RMA.]

Unbelieveable about the email blocks. So very cloak and dagger.

Back in June I think it was David Finck was explaining to us how the music business works. Now he is interpreting the 802 election for us. Where would we be without the didactic Finck?
