I. CRUCIAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MONDAY, OCTOBER 26th
Colleagues,
Don’t forget the upcoming general membership meeting on
Monday, October 26th, 7pm at the Local!
Have questions about the SELAS or their re-instatement? Health
Insurance? Officer Conduct? Rehearsal Rooms? Recording Studio?
Anything else you want discussed?
The October 26th meeting is the venue!
As a reminder, those on the Local 47 side of the table in the SELA decision were:
President Vince Trombetta, Hal Espinosa and Jay Rosen.
PLEASE BE THERE!
THE COMMITTEE
=================
II. MEMBER RESPONSES TO MR. ERDODY’S COMMENT
Mr. Erdody, you should realize that since you chose to place yourself
in an extremely controversial public position as a plaintiff in a very
public and unpopular lawsuit against our own federation, it should
not come as a surprise that some of the tens of thousands of AFM
members, members of the organization you are suing, may take a
dim view of you and/or your actions and express that viewpoint in
their personal comments.
———————————————
Can anyone be “damaged” by having it reported that they make
“too much money”?
———————————————
If a musician is indeed boasting in public about the money they make,
the matter is no longer private. For instance, any music journalist
present at that rehearsal could also have written the same piece.
———————————————
I couldn’t help but notice that in the Committee’s response to Mr.
Erdody’s claims in the latest newsletter, the standard Committee disclaimer
adds the word “typically” before “uncensored views of the readers.” Then,
later on in the mailing, the same disclaimer omits this word. The response
to Erdody seems to imply that the Committee has, in fact, been engaging in
some censorship of the readers’ views, which is not necessarily a bad thing
on its face, but we all know that words can be carefully crafted to further
an agenda or distort the truth — as seems to be the case here. What is the
explanation for the sudden (and one-time) appearance of the word “typically”
in this response?
——————————-
Colleagues,
As we were crafting our response to Mr. Erdody, it occurred to us that
over the years there have been exceptions to the rule of “uncensored”
comments.
1) Not printing comments that become an ad hominem attack on other
members with no reasonable connection to the subject of the member’s
comment.
For instance, after the initial email comment naming Mr. Erdody,
we received a number of emails attacking that same member in rather
personal and explicit terms. We chose not to print those comments
because they would serve no useful purpose.
2) We’ve written back to contributors asking for their comments to be
reworded before we could print them because of the language they use.
3) We’ve printed the comment but redacted offending language that heads
off on a tangent that is not appropriate.
The response to Mr. Erdody was helpful in pointing out that, though
we’ve been in existence since 2005, and we’ve only changed or refused
a small fraction of the comments sent, we should be even more
precise in our disclaimer.
From now on the term “typically” will be included in our comment
disclaimer before the word uncensored, at least until the disclaimer
is rewritten completely.
Thank you for writing and do so as often as you like.

III. SECRETARY AT IT YET AGAIN
If you read the minutes from the September 1st, 2009 Local 47
board meeting (October, 2009 Overture, page 25, column 2),
you’ll find yet another request to work within the jurisdiction
from Secretary Leslie Lashinsky. This time she wanted to take
work with the Symphony of the Glen from September 29th to
October 8th.
She simply doesn’t get it.
Luckily, in this case, the board did. Without objection the entire
board in attendance denied her permission to take this work from
Local 47 rank and file bassoonists.
We thank the board for their conscience, and hope they will
retain it for any future inappropriate requests.
Those in attendance at the meeting were:
President Trombetta, VP John Acosta and Directors Judy Chilnik,
Gary Lasley, Pam Gates, Bonnie Janofsky and Roy D’Antonio.
Thank you for doing the right thing.
THE COMMITTEE

IV. COMMENTS
The comments below and elsewhere in this mailing represent the
typically uncensored views of the readers and not necessarily those
of the COMMITTEE. In the faith that freedom of expression allows
for the birth and ascendancy of the most beneficial ideas, all sentiments
expressed are welcome, subject to the bounds of good taste and
decorum. If you disagree with an opinion expressed by any contributor,
we encourage you to rebut it here.
——————————–
The RMALA members should think very carefully about the lawsuits
they have filed. They are, in essence, asking the government to
interfere with union politics. This will set a precedent that will affect
all unions for years to come. Win or lose, it is an invitation for the
kind of government intervention that has not been seen since RICO.
It demonstrates our union can’t settle our differences. That is not
completely the fault of just one side. It takes two to tango. But maybe
that is exactly what our union needs to survive, government oversight.
————————————–
CONCERNING THE SELA…
(I emailed this to President Vince Trombetta September 11)
Why is the membership only now hearing of a decision made August 26
that impacts so many members?
What is the time goal for revising and reinstating SELA?
If there are fraudulent practices going on, why could they be allowed to
continue thru Sept. 30?
Individual leaders who submit SELA aren’t payroll agencies; the other
musicians they hire are considered independent contractors, not on a payroll.
Can the individual leaders who submit SELA contracts be audited separately
from the payroll agencies?
Harriet Katz
(I never received a reply.)
————————————–
I agree with the anonymous member’s remarks about Trombetta’s so-called
“President’s Report” in the Overture. His reports are just a bunch of BS to
fill space. Although dry reading, at least former Pres Espinosa’s reports
indicated that the union was doing SOMETHING…

MESSAGE FROM AWARD WINNING COMPOSER CARL JOHNSON
I’ve recently written the score to a new musical theatre work

having a “staged reading” (no sets, costumes or props, actors
reading from scripts) on October 26 in Burbank. It’s still a
work-in-progress, but it should be a lot of fun. Here are the
particulars. Thanks! Carl Johnson
