Tribute planned for Van Nuys violinist who suffered heart attack
By Sue Doyle, Staff Writer, Daily News Los Angeles
Updated: 07/23/2009 09:58:19 PM PDT
Robert Korda played the violin for 20 years with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic and died July 8 from a heart attack.
Colleagues of the late violinist Robert Korda, who went missing
for several days this month after he suffered a fatal heart attack
at a Glendale home, are planning a musical tribute to a man known
for his love of music.
Tentatively set for Aug. 25 at Canoga Park’s Madrid Theatre, the
eclectic program will begin with a serenade by strolling violinists.
It’s a musical style relished by Korda, who retired in 1980 after
two decades with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Colleagues,
Mark your calendar NOW for the Monday, July 27 general meeting.
We need a quorum so we can raise:
–What’s up with the Referral Service and the backsliding of the RS Website?
–Why is the board stonewalling Studio 47
–Why does the Executive Board let the Secretary do so many Local 47
jurisdiction jobs? Who votes for it, what excuse can they offer?
–Is it true that leaders who use the rehearsal studios are penalized if
there’s a non-union member at the rehearsal? If yes, by what authority?
–Are the President buddies getting a break on rehearsal room use suspensions?
Unless enough of us show up for a quorum, we won’t be able to ask the
questions or get the answers.

I. RADIO STATIONS BATTLE PERFORMANCE RIGHTS ACT
Radio stations step up battle against Performance Rights Act
For more than 80 years, commercial stations have aired songs
without paying royalties to musicians, but a bill making its way
through Congress would change that.
By Kristina Sherry
July 3, 2009
Reporting from Washington — Broadcasters call the Performance
Rights Act a tax. To the music industry, it’s more like a royalty
fee. But the legislation, which is gaining momentum in both the
House and the Senate, is making radio stations nervous.

Robert “Bobby” Korda Found Deceased
Robert Korda, former L.A. Philharmonic violinist, is found dead
1:08 PM, July 13, 2009
Korda Robert Korda, a violinist who played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for nearly 20 years, was found dead Sunday by the Los Angeles Police Department after he was reported missing by his family on Wednesday.
The LAPD said that Korda, 68, was reported missing after he failed to show up for work at the Gower Studios in Hollywood last week. An investigation as to the cause of his death is underway.
Korda began his tenure as a second violinist at the L.A. Philharmonic during the 1960-61 season and played with the orchestra until 1980. During his time with the philharmonic, Korda played under the baton of two music directors — Zubin Mehta and Carlo Maria Giulini.
Since leaving the philharmonic, Korda has worked as a freelance musician and played with various orchestras and chamber groups.
According to police reports, Korda’s body was identified Sunday in custody at the coroner’s office. It turned out that authorities had picked up his body Wednesday at a home in Glendale and transported it to a hospital where he was pronounced dead later that same day. The body was subsequently transferred to the coroner’s office.
Korda’s son, Noah, had launched a frantic search for his father via a personal blog.
“My father has been found and my family and I are making funeral arrangements,” says the latest entry on the blog. “At the families request, we ask at this time to please do not call any of the family’s cell phone numbers or home numbers.”

Missing Van Nuys violinist found dead
12:31 PM | July 13, 2009
A missing Van Nuys violinist at the center of a desperate search effort by his family has been found dead, authorities said this morning.
The family of 68-year-old Robert Alan Korda had been asking for help on the Internet and combing the streets near his San Fernando Valley home since last Wednesday when he went missing. But it now appears he had been in the county coroner’s office all along.
According to police, Korda was last seen about 3 p.m. Wednesday at his home and never showed up that evening at Gower Studios in Hollywood, where he was scheduled to work. Coroner’s officials said Korda was actually found unresponsive shortly before 7 p.m. that day at a home in Glendale. The violinist was rushed to the hospital, and was pronounced dead less than an hour later, said Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter.
Meanwhile, Korda’s family was growing increasingly worried. His son, Noah, began utilizing many forms of social media on the Web in the search for his father, asking people to spread the word through blogs and Twitter.
“I don’t know where to begin,” Noah Korda wrote on his blog after his father’s disappearance. “I know that sometimes sending out messages like this can help locate people. I am asking for any help at this point.”
Noah Korda wrote on his blog that the family sought the help of the Los Angeles Police Department, which scoured databases at tow yards, hospitals, and the coroner’s office for the missing violinist. But at some point, his name had been wrongly entered into the system as Robert Norda.
The police search led to a court warrant for the records of Korda’s cellphone, according to his son’s blog. Investigators realized on Sunday that Korda’s body was at the coroner’s office, said LAPD officer Bruce Borihanh.
An autopsy was performed Sunday, Winter said. Korda appeared to have died of natural causes, but an exact cause of death has not yet been determined.
Korda was a former violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and also worked as a freelance performer.

Verizon Won’t Release GPS Of Missing Violinist
LOS ANGELES (CBS) -
Violinist Robert Korda has been missing for since
Wednesday.
The family and friends are concerned for their

man’s cell phone carrier to assist in the search.
Police say 69-year-old Robert Alan Korda was last
seen Wednesday afternoon at his Van Nuys home.
“We’re trying to get Verizon Wireless, his
(cellphone) carrier, to release the GPS location

have at this point,” his son Noah Korda said.

information to him or law enforcement.
“I understand there are laws, but this is a
major emergency,” he said.
Family members said Korda was scheduled to work
at Gower Studios, but never showed up. They also
said it was out of character for Korda to lose
contact with his family.
“It’s weird,” his son Noah Korda said. “My father
is a non-drinker, non-gambler, non-smoker…he
just completely disappeared.”
Noah Korda said there has been no activity on any
of his father’s banking or credit card accounts
since he vanished and there was no reason to
