I. RECENT OSCARS COMMENT
Here is a recent comment:
We received this comment too late to put out before the Oscars:
Union Musicians performing on the OSCARS should refuse to
play music from films with soundtracks that were recorded
under non-union contracts. PERIOD.
Jim Sitterly
———————-
Here are the best film nominees this year.
-Curious Case of Benjamin Button: US
-Frost/Nixon: No evidence of US Recording on IMDB
-MIlk: All Danny Elman Cues on the CD are listed as the Choristers
of Reigate St. Mary’s, from Surrey, England. “A-List” LA Orchestrators
but no contractor listed.
-The Reader: No evidence of US Recording on IMDB.
-Slumdog Millionaire: Not Scored in the US.
Considering three or four out of the five best picture nominees were
likely scored outside of the US, and that everything for the Oscar broadcast
was pre-recorded, except when the orchestra was actually seen, a stunt
like that would have lead to immediate firings during the pre-record
sessions.

I. The American Federation of Musicians Announces Its Support
for Network “Net” Neutrality by Joining Rock the Net and Internet
for Everyone
New York, NY - The American Federation of Musicians of the United
States and Canada (AFM), in support of the concept of network “net”
neutrality, has joined Future of Music Coalition’s Rock the Net campaign
and Free Press’ Internet for Everyone initiative.
In the 21st century, the Internet has become a critical method for
musicians to distribute their work. Artists of all levels of success use
the Internet to get their music to fans, either through iTunes, eMusic,
Amazon, YouTube, MySpace or the myriad other websites that allow
music to be sold or streamed. The Internet allows music and musicians
to flourish and must be kept open and neutral. At the same time, the
music that is carried over the Internet must be protected from copyright
infringement. These two concepts are not antithetical, and AFM will work
to see that both principles are enshrined in legislation and administration
policy.
AFM congratulates the Future of Music Coalition and Free Press for their
success in advocating for an open Internet and will work with them and
the creative community to promote network neutrality while protecting
copyrighted content.

I. ADD BELGRADE TO THE LIST - AFM ARE YOU TAKING NOTE?
Colleagues,
Belgrade has now entered the film, library, indie and record market.
Certainly the RMA won’t care as long as their core group keeps their
back end, but that leaves a vast majority of their own members and
the vast majority of recording musicians (who aren’t members of the
RMA, by the way) flapping in the wind. (Ain’t monopolies grand?)
The Golden Goose is continuing to die.
From the PRO ARTE WEBSITE
PRO ARTE ORCHESTRA

give flexibility and very competitive pricing related to the finest quality

I. CHARLES VEAL PASSES, MESSAGE FROM JERRY PETERS
Friends and Collegues…..
Many of you may or may not know that we lost our very dear
friend, as well as a supremely gifted musical artist, Charles
Veal, Jr. on Friday, January 23, 2009. Charles died of a seizure
while waiting at the bus stop in the City of Chicago.
It has been a trying week for those of us who knew early on of
this tragedy. We all came together and supported one another
in the best way that we could. To soften the blow of this great loss,
we encourage you to share with someone something “stupid” that
Charles may have said or done that made you laugh. We all know,
along with his “unparalleled” genius, he was a one-of-a-kind “true
character”. Bigger than life itself. He meant a lot to so many; he
touched the lives of so many.
Jerry Peters
(Known to Charles as simply, J P)
“Professor, we miss you already. For me, it’s like the end of an era.”
