I. LOCAL 47 DOING RIGHT BY CAL PHIL MUSICIANS?
After LOCAL 47′S dismal lip-service defense of the Pasadena Pops
musicians who lost their jobs when it was taken over by the Pasadena
Symphony (Including 45 tenured musicians), President Trombetta
seems determined to take a different direction than his management-
favorable predecessor in his and his team’s defense of the
California Philharmonic musicians.
The Cal Phil is suffering much as other orchestras, organizations and
even schools are because of the economic downturn and the drying up of
donations. They are in debt, to Local 47 musicians, vendors and the
IRS for substantial amounts.
Members are owed pay, a few from as far back as August.
Maestro Victor Vener, to his credit, has put tens of thousands of
his own money into helping the orchestra stay afloat, but has not been
as responsive as the Local would like.
President Trombetta and his team, which includes among others the new
VP John Accosta are reaching beyond our jurisdiction for help in how
to handle this situation effectively and appropriately.
We understand that ROPA (Regional Orchestra Players Association)
has either gotten involved or is being consulted, as well as the lawyer
for the Symphonic Services Division of the AFM.
The California Philharmonic has one of the biggest audiences for
a group of their type in the United States, but has always lacked in the
fundraising area.
We wish President Trombetta and his team every good luck in this situation.
It is a most welcome change!

II. GOING TO THURSDAY’S RMAC (RMA) MEETING? TWO VIEWS
We have two interesting and informative views on the
RMA’s meeting Thursday night,…
Enjoy:
- If you plan to go to the RMAC’s (Read RMA) rose-colored glasses
fantasy evening this Thursday, here are a few things to keep in
mind as the brainwashing is attempted:
I) If the RMA is and has been so successful then
WHY on their watch have:
a) Nearly HALF of our precious recording jobs originating
in Los Angeles are being completed in Seattle and
Europe. Daily, Weekly……Monthly and Yearly
b) TWO major scoring stages (Paramount and TODD-AO)
CLOSED in the year 2008? - because recording is
SOOOO healthy in LA??
II. FEW BIG FILMS BEING DONE OUTSIDE LA?
Here’s just a fraction of the many, not including the
union work in San Francisco:
THE DARK KNIGHT (London); ABOUT SCHMIDT (Seattle);
W (Prague); BROKEBACK MTN (Seattle); THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT (Prague);
CLOVERFIELD (Bratislava); THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN (London);
EASTERN PROMISES (LONDON); THE EYE (Bratislava); THE GOLDEN COMPASS (London);
HAPPY FEET (Australia - some songs produced in Los Angeles); IRONMAN (London);
JUMPER (Sydney); KUNG FU PANDA (London); LAST CHANCE HARVEY (Prague);
MAMMA MIA (London); THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR (London);
THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL (Prague); P.S. I LOVE YOU (SYDNEY);
ROCKY BALBOA (Seattle); SECOND HAND LIONS (Bratislava);
TWO FOR THE MONEY (Bratislava); THE WATERHORSE (LONDON -
with RMA PRESIDENT PETE ANTHONY CONDUCTING!—-oops);
3:10 TO YUMA (LONDON);
Don ‘t take our word for it, please check the websites below,
- http://www.seattlemusic.com
Keep watching as the movie posters present themselves,
then keep that in mind as the RMA serves their pablum
Thursday night..
-http://praguerecording.com/projects.html
Make particular note of the number of Video Game
and soundtrack albums they’ve done.
-http://www.musicrecordinginbratislava.com/credits.html
Make particular note of the number of Video Games
and soundtrack albums they’ve done.
-http://www.tadlowmusic.com/
Note all the soundtracks done here,… with the right
contract ALL of this could have been done in Los Angeles.
-http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0341690/
The sheer number of A list movies here is astounding
,… far, far more than 10%, as Mr. KollGaard contends

Sydney
Above are the facts, folks. After doing your research,
see how true what you’re told by the RMA smoke
blowers sounds.

I. LOCAL 47 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING JANUARY 12TH
Our first membership meeting of 2009
coming up this Monday, 7 pm at the Local.
See you there!
=================
II. AFM SUBPOENAS RMA COMMUNICATIONS
…. and we say, IT’S ABOUT TIME! No one could have
expected our federation would sit back and “take
it” forever. Now if someone would force the RMA to
open their books…
Here’s the info, according to the AFM Observer
The RMA has been served with a subpoena by the
AFM for, amongst other things, the following:
* All notes you [RMA] took at any AFM convention
you have attended.
* All documents reflecting or memorializing the
meaning or intent of any resolution considered or
adopted at an AFM Convention related to the collection,
receipt, payment, or remittance of work dues in
connection with any agreement.
* All documents reflecting communications
between you and any other person, including, without
limitation, an Plaintiff or Plaintiffs, Local 47, any other
person who is or was a member of AFM, any person
who is or was represented by AFM, the Recording
Musicians Association - Los Angeles (”RMA-LA”),
Fareplay Inc., the Fareplay Legal Action Fund, Rafael
Rishik, Dennis Dreith, or Phil Ayling, relating to,
reflecting, discussing, or regarding:
a. AFM’s practices or policies in connection
with work dues:
b. Local 47’s practices of policies in connection
with work dues;
c. The initiation of this lawsuit, the funding of
this lawsuit, or any other aspect of this lawsuit;
d. Any demands you have made on Local 47
or AFM relating to the assessment, collection,
or remittance of work dues;
e. The meaning or intent of any resolution,
recommendation, or bylaw, considered or adopted,
at any AFM Convention relating to AFM work dues;
f. The meaning of the term “AFM-negotiated
agreement.”
* All documents and communications relating
to the meaning of the term “AFM-negotiated agreement.”
Colleagues,
We hope this will include any correspondence between
the RMA and Local 47 legal counsel Lewis Levy, to look
for any possible conflict of interest in his conduct.
Will the AFM get the info? If there’s any such a thing as
an electronic shredder, it’s probably already working
overtime,… or would that be the reformat hard drive
button?
THE BEST LAUGH…
The last line of the article is “This is probably the most
direct attack on the idea of a democratic AFM that any
of us have seen in our careers as union activists.” He
must mean BESIDES the conduct of the RMA for the
last 20 years, considering the blackballing and
monopolistic conduct of the group. Talk about hypocrisy!!

I. GLOBAL RECORDING OPTIONS
GLOBAL SCORING WEBSITES
WEBSITES - Global Recording - Are we really
going to keep letting these locations steal
our AFM based scoring and recording work?
We are if we allow the RMA to control the terms.
1) Simon James - contractor in Seattle
http://www.simonjamesmusic.com
Go to his services page, click on services and
then the the genres of sessions he has done
Go to the scroll bar - prepare to become sick
- most of the composers live here in LA by
the way.
Also in Seattle is
2) David Sabee’s site - he works together with Simon James
nowhttp://www.seattlemusic.comclick around
there and see big movies that won awards there too
———————
REMOTE LOS ANGELES RECORDING:
T1 high speed video and audio feed -
you can drive to Santa Monica to a studio and
watch your score being recorded in PRAGUE
or Bratislava after you have pdf’d it there.
http://www.orchestra.net/
……
MORE REMOTE LOS ANGELES RECORDING:
http://praguerecording.com/projects.html
click around there - he doesn’t have a client
list or project list - but he is working daily
doing projects
———————
RECORDING ABROAD
Here is the website for the Czech Film Orchestra -
yes they are actually calling themselves that now -
VERY SPECIALIZED HEH?
http://www.czechfilmorchestra.com/
……
BRATISLAVA
http://www.musicrecordinginbratislava.com
……
LONDON
Books a Prague based and London based orchestra.
http://www.tadlowmusic.com
……
LONDON is still doing a lot of LA based scores - Isobel
Griffiths is one of the main contractors
HER IMDB LIST IS HERE:
http://imdb.com/name/nm0341690
In fact, any London orchestra can be booked for film
recording, be it the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the
BBC Philharmonic, the London Symphony orchestra or
any of the other outstanding groups there.
……
Beyond the recording locations list above, you can
add: Perth, Australia; Barcelona, Spain; Mexico; Salt Lake
City; Arizona or any number of groups inside and outside
the country looking for work.
Can we afford to stay in the dark ages and hope things
work out? Pride goes before the fall, and we’ve already
fallen quite a distance because of certain RMA egos and
vendettas.
Don’t blame the composers. They often have no choice
on where to record, either because of their contract,
or because they simply, in the case of personal projects,
cannot afford to record here.
Turn it down, they say? There are hundreds of others who
will take the terms and who also have mortgages to pay.
Besides that,on any given day you can see the most adamant
RMA and Union-only supporters willingly sitting on non-
union and scab jobs. Bills don’t stop and they have to be paid.
Careful of those glass houses.
You can stay silent, but you cannot say you’re uninformed.
