I. LOCAL OFFERS SELF-PAY HEALTH PLAN,.. WITH STRINGS
Months ago we reported to you that there had been a February, 2008
meeting in Honolulu where two self pay health plans for some AFM locals
was presented. Those in attendance included representatives from Local 47.
The Local reported that they had been working on such a health plan for 2
years and we found evidence of that in the board meeting minutes. That
activity seemed to accelerate after we reported the meeting to you.
The plans discussed in February were Kaiser and Health-net, but the Local is
offering only a Kaiser plan.
The President reports that it will only be offered for a year if the new plan
competes with the H and W fund or causes it “damage”. Even if the board
dumps the plan after a year, each participant SHOULD have 18 months
of continued coverage through COBRA and, if the self-pay plan is just
that, it should cost no more to do so.

DON’T FORGET THE JULY 28TH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING! 7PM AT THE LOCAL!
I. IMPORTANT COMMENT FROM AN ORANGE COUNTY READER
I appreciate being on your mailing list and hearing the importance of being an active member. I just wondered if anybody out there is addressing the REAL problems affecting many of our members. Regardless of who owns the Union, the RMA or special interests or whatever, I’d like to hear something said about what is going on with the
current situation of NO EMPLOYMENT DUE TO GAS PRICES, INFLATION and the RECESSION OR DEPRESSION that we seem to be going through. I know it’s summer, but I’ve only had one job in June and only two scheduled jobs for July. Forget about August for now. I’ve always counted on last minute work, but this is different. I am in danger of losing everything due to non employment if this keeps up.
A concerned member in Orange County.

Colleagues,
President Espinosa is complaining about the Committee again in a desperate attempt
to move the attention away from the conduct of the Local 47 board, saying once again
that we are wrong in what we print.
If Mr. Espinosa has issues with what we said about the recording musicians lawsuit and
our Local filing an interpleader, he should take it up with the court documents, which is
where we got our information. If he has a problem with being described as an employee
of the AFM, he should remember (Which he most likely does.) that without the AFM, he
wouldn’t have the job he has, since there would be no AFM LOCAL 47. No AFM, No
PRESIDENT Espinosa.
Our record stands, once again.

I. RMA’s NEXT APPARENT TARGET? ORCHESTRAL TENURE
Well folks, we warned you this is where they were going, and
the RMA higher ups are working on it.
We have verification from multiple sources in Los Angeles and
elsewhere that the RMA is considering targeting the tenure
clauses of local orchestral CBAs (Collective Bargaining Agreements).
Encouraged by the successful takeover (They call it a “merger”)
of the Pasadena Pops by the Pasadena Symphony, tossing out
60+ professional musicians, including 41 tenured musicians
and many founding members who worked with the Pasadena
Pops for over 20 years, the RMA is apparently investigating
moves to take more work from others as theirs dwindles.
A few RMA members told us that at a recent RMA meeting
they were informed that the RMA is looking for legal ways
get rid of, nullify or do an end run around tenure clauses in
area orchestras’ CBAs. This could potentially affect the careers
of 1500-2000 musicians.
